UNDER MCKINNEY-VENTO, ELIGIBLE STUDENTS HAVE THE RIGHT TO:

  • Immediate enrollment even when records normally required for enrollment are not available

  • Attend classes while school gathers required documents

  • Equal access to all school programs they are eligible for

  • Enroll in either their local school of attendance or continue attending their school of origin

  • Receive transportation resources to and from school if eligible

  • Rights and protections specifically for unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness

IF THERE IS A DISPUTE ABOUT SCHOOL SELECTION

  • If you and the school disagree about where your child should go to school, the school must notify you in writing why your child should attend a school other than the one you selected and how you can appeal this decision.

  • Your child can still enroll, attend, and participate fully in the school you selected until the disagreement is settled.
